Addressing foot pain starts with looking at the shoes

Shoes can add to the comfort of anti-fatigue mats.

If you’re spending a lot of time standing at work, you may find some slight discomfort in your joints and feet. While anti-fatigue mats can provide an extra layer of cushioning to help protect your joints and keep you feeling good, it’s also important to think about the kind of footwear you’re wearing on a daily basis.

According to Self, people will commonly select shoes that don’t have a good level of support, which can often cause foot pain, particularly if you’re standing for long periods of time. The news provider also reports it’s pretty common to unknowingly be wearing the wrong size, so it’s a good idea to have your feet measured if you’ve been feeling uncomfortable in your shoes.

Prevention reports it’s common for feet to swell during the day, so whenever you’re testing out shoes, you need to make sure that your toes have enough room to wiggle around in. Because of this, the source also recommends trying on shoes toward the end of the day, because that’s when feet will swell to their largest. Additionally, the news provider reports that if your shoes are too old, such as leaning to one side when you lie them on a flat surface, it’s time for a new, more supportive pair.

Stay on your feet to help your health

Anti-fatigue mats make standing easier.

When you’re thinking about taking a new job, do you ever consider the health implications? Whether you spend your day standing on an anti fatigue or sitting at a desk and staring at a computer, it could have an impact on your health. There have been varying studies over which is better, and while it’s important to make sure you break up your day, there may be some more positives in standing.

Men’s Journal reports that a study done on postal workers, who either sat in an office all day or were out delivering mail, found that those who stayed on their feet had a smaller waist circumference. Additionally, those who were sitting on the job found that their risk of cardiovascular disease was half a percent higher over a 10-year frame. The news provider reports that after five hours, every additional hour you sit could increase your waistline by nearly an inch over time.

However, it’s important to take breaks of both standing and sitting. Fortune reports that standing for more than two hours at a time can cause discomfort all over the body, which in turn could create other issues, like not being able to focus on the task at hand and becoming less productive.

Trying to combat foot pain at work? Try these tips

Use anti-fatigue mats to help with foot pain.

When you’re standing at work for most of the day, you may find that your feet may be feeling a little bit of pressure. There’s also pain associated with prolonged sitting, but it’s important for people to address their pain head on. One reason for the discomfort could be standing on a hard surface, which could lead to strain. Instead, consider getting an anti fatigue mat to help alleviate the pressure on your feet.

According to the Oakland Press, there are other ways you can combat foot pain if you’re finding yourself standing on the job. The news provider suggests sitting down and moving your toes around to help circulate blood flow. Sometimes, if you’ve been standing too long, it can reduce the blood flow to the feet, so it’s important to keep circulation going to avoid any potential problems.

Prevention also recommends alternating between running hot and cold water on top of your feet in the bathtub. The news provider says alternating every other minute has been a practice at European spas to help cure ailing feet. If you have a detachable shower head, that could be used instead of trying to hold your feet steady under the faucet while you balance on the edge.

Could standing at work actually make you smarter?

Anti-fatigue mats keep you comfortable when standing on the job.

Have you ever felt your brain working at lightning speed when you’re on your feet? There are multiple benefits to standing at work, with researchers suggesting it can help you be more productive and also keep blood pressure down. More people are using anti-fatigue mats to help reduce the pressure to the joints and make it more comfortable to stand.

The New York Times reports that a new study suggests found that frequently sitting reduced the thickness of the medial temporal lobe, which is critical to the brain’s ability to learn and memorize things. In an effort to keep the brain in good condition, consider taking standing breaks at work throughout the day in an effort to keep the lobe thick.

The research studied a group of 35 people and found that those who sat longer throughout the day had the thinnest lobes, despite everyone in the group being in good health.

The initiative to increase standing at work is not new, as the National Institutes of Health refers to the initiative as “Stand More AT Work (SMArT).” The research suggests early intervention into sedentary behavior can help people realize the importance of taking standing breaks at work. With more research coming out showing the damage prolonged sitting does, more people are taking time to stretch their legs.
